But you get the gist. Orange wine is the latest trend in skin-contact wine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">essentially<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it\u2019s&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">white wine made like red wine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;using the skin of the grapes.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">White wine is typically made by first pressing the skins off and allowing the juice to ferment separately, while red wine is&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">made from the must<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, or pulp,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;of the grapes fermented with skins intact.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Orange winemakers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">allow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;grape skins<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;to mingle with the juice during the fermentation process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he longer they\u2019re left to play, the more orange the wine.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Despite what your Instagram feed may have led you to believe, this fad has been around for centuries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">not just the few months you\u2019ve&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">been&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">follow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;#<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">orangewine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;(with a whopping 59<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">00<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;posts). The tradition dates back at lea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">st 5,000 years to the Caucasus region<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">modern-day Georgia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">where large vessels called&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">qvevri<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;held wines as they fermented<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, skins and all.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the West, orange wines were more obscure until&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Italian winemaker&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Josko<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gravner<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">revived the art of&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">r<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">amato<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;(the Italian term for auburn-hued wine)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">90s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">US<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">winemakers like Channing Daughters in New York<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;followed suit in the late 2000s.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">When people ask me to recommend an orange wine, it\u2019s usually more&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;unforgettable experience they\u2019re after, rather than some specific color,\u201d says&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lauren&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Friel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ommelier and owner of Rebel Rebel wine bar in Somerville,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ass<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">achusetts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;Let this be a lesson in judging books by their covers: Orange wines<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014which can be made using any white grape varietal\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">come in all shades, from orange-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ish<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;or \u201cbaby orange\u201d (a&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Friel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-ism) to hues bordering on full-blown&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cheeto<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Georgian<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vintners from this Caucasus country<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;continue to produce some of the finest&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and priciest<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;skin-contact wines on the market. While&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">admitting that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;it\u2019s difficult to generalize about large regions,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Friel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">says that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">there are some definite markers for&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Georgian&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">orange wines.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;tend to be darkest in color, often trending towards amber.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">They often<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;contain powerful<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;earthy notes, almost wild in their force.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Georgian winemakers produce on a smaller scale<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">making them&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">costlier<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and they tend to use methods tied to tradition<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;according to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Friel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">When it comes to pairing, aim for&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">saltier&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">cheese<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;that will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;stand up to th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e rich<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;tannin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Marcel Petit&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Comt\u00e9<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;+&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our Wine<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">2010&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rkatsiteli<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pecorino&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sardo<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;PDO<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Maturo<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;+&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ramaz<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nikoladze<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">2013&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tsitska-Tsolikou<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">ri<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">Italian<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ian<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;orange wines&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">tend to boast<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;more citrus, less earth, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;bold<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;aromatic qualities.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;One of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Friel\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;favorite orange wines is Terra&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">dei<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Preti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;in Umbria, with its notes of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">jasmine tea and honeysuckle. However, Sicilians are much better known for wines of this hue. Domestic orange wines can&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">be funkier than their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;imported&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">counterparts;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">California\u2019s Dirty &amp; Rowdy is making domestic orange wines<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;that are both resinous and punchy with&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rich<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;honeyed texture<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, while Vermont\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">La&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Garagista<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;is producing&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">downright earthy
